Born in Hyogo, Japan, Yumi is the only Japanese Butoh Dancer in Australia and the creator of original Butoh Cabaret works. Originally as a member of the seminal Butoh Company DaiRakudakan in Tokyo, she moved to Australia in 1993. Yumi has appeared in numerous dance, theatre and film productions in Australia Japan, Europe, and Eastern Asia. Her unique Butoh Cabaret shows, solo dance works and film works has been shown in the major festivals inside and outside of Australia and won awards such as Green Room Awards. She teaches Butoh regularly and curates Beyond Butoh Festival with Tony Yap in Melbourne.
